Discovering the Artist's process

An Artist's Process is deep water...

Greetings, I am Dr. J.P. Zubro, an artist specializing in hand-crafted digital art. My art work is inspired by both the simplicity and complexity found in the beauty of our existence. Some of my work appears to be more rooted in the universe we know but for those pieces that are most fantastical I rely on inspiration from highly detailed dreams I experience nightly.  In order to transport the viewer to these other realms I create pictographical representations of my 'thoughtscape' in the form of surreal compositions.

On this page I reveal a bit of the inner workings of my artistic vision and process. I have been greatly inspired by the works of the Old Masters and those of Gustave Doré but also more contemporary artists of the 'new world', namely Whistler, Rockwell, Robert Wood and of course the indomitable Bob Ross. In order to replicate the effect of Doré's work I mastered a style of 'etching' using a blank iPad screen as a canvas upon which I apply many hundreds - sometimes thousands - of white lines, the totality of which produce the final image. Many of my works began their life as rough sketches, really no more than simple line drawings upon which I develop the thematic elements and stage the lighting and perspectives.

The etching works can take many, many long hours stretched over month's of time. I typically have several works in various stages of completion. I do this, at least in part, to avoid burnout and to maintain a 'wet edge' to drive the creative process. On this page I will be including a time lapse of Thumbelina's Surprise, a piece that took months and tens of hours to complete. I meticulously recorded every pen stroke and arranged the creation of the work in a series of chapters. The recording was so long that I increased the time factor by 1000% and its still over an hour in length! In the mean time, the final image is included below as a short zoom-out video.

I have also included some other shorter videos that contain a series of screen shots cataloging the completion of the stylized oil-on-canvas paintings. I have added sound tracks to heighten the cinematic effect and I hope you enjoy the results.
